Ann’s business had failed and as a result she had become depressed, stressed and anxious. The 50 year old had been unemployed for six months when she joined Ingeus.
“I felt helpless, not in control. I thought there would be no end to my situation. I was suffering from depression, anxiety, stress and became very unwell with it all.”
Given the history of Ann’s business, she suffered from a fear of failure and got major anxiety at the thought of working again. Her Ingeus advisor, Vanessa, had to first get Ann’s confidence back and they set up job goals together so Ann could gain a sense of control, purpose and assurance.
“Vanessa gave me hope and a constructive, step-by-step program and framework from which I could build myself back up. Vanessa was so supportive without being patronising.”
Vanessa organised for Ann to attend a number of workshops to help boost her confidence, as well as get her interacting with people again. She also developed a new CV and had lengthy one-to-one appointments with Ann to offer the support and reassurance she needed.
“It made me much more confident, more motivated and enthusiastic about life. I am physically and mentally a much more active person.”
Ann had a strong background in catering as well as administration, but she was open to trying new fields. She went for an interview for a chiropractic assistant position which she secured. To make sure Ann kept her stress levels down while in work, Vanessa provided in work support as well as developing a diary management program.
“It’s worth looking at other job options that might suit you, and there is help out there to enable you to tackle the job search ... you’ll feel so much stronger in yourself at the end of it.”
