John, 50, had been out of work for just over a year and was claiming Jobseekers Allowance. John heard about Ingeus through his Jobcentre Plus advisor who set up an appointment for him.
John had a lot of experience in construction, warehouse and the production industries, but he felt his age and his location were barriers to finding work.
Ingeus advisor Matt initially discussed John’s job search needs with him and subsequently organised a number of workshops and training opportunities for him. John attended CV and cover letter writing workshops, as well as basic IT workshops and interview skills training. Matt also completed an In-work Benefit Calculation to demonstrate to John that he was financially better off in work.
John was extremely open to the type of job he wanted. He was eager to get back into a warehouse or cleaning job, but his main goal was just to get back into work. Matt arranged Ingeus’ financial help with John’s travel costs to and from interviews, as well as work clothing.
In April 2010, John started as a temporary cleaner through an agency. Just three months later John secured a permanent contract directly with the employer and was promoted to Team Leader.
